Mendeley - reference management tool

Editing citations

You can manually edit an in-text citation. Activate the citation by clicking on it. While it is active, the citation is framed in blue and you will see editing options in the Mendeley Cite menu.

  • Clicking on the reference under Edit Citation allows you to make the most common changes:
    • Adding a page number to a text reference.
    • Hide the author's name (Suppress author).
    • Information in Prefix shows at the start of the reference and information in Suffix at the end.
  • Clicking on Add reference allows you to add more references to a text reference.
  • Corrections to spelling or typographical errors or missing information ought to be made in the Mendeley library. These changes can then be transferred to your bibliography. In Word, click on More -> Update From Library in Mendeley Cite to get the updated references.
  • Selecting Manually override citation allows you to make any kind of changes to a text reference. In that case, this reference will no longer be updated from the Mendeley library, so use the function carefully. You can undo the changes by clicking on Revert to default.

The font of the citations and the bibliography can be changed in Word.

Editing the bibliography

Changes to reference details ought to be made in the Library of Mendeley Reference Manager. Remembert to click on More -> Update From Library in Mendeley Cite (in Word) if you make any changes while your document is open.

  • Change the language of your bibliography in Mendeley Cite under Citation Settings.

You can turn the bibliography into plain text by breaking the link to Mendeley:

  • Finish your document before you update the bibliography.
  • It is recommended that you save a backup of your document before you carry out the following steps. Although it is always possible to create a new bibliography with Insert Bibliography, in case you add more sources.
  • Right-click on the active (visible frames) bibliography and select Remove Content Control. The link to Mendeley is broken and can no longer be repaired.
  • You can now make changes to the bibliography manually.

Editing the referencing style

At Arcada we use APA 7th Edition as our referencing style. In Mendeley it is possible to create your own styles, however. If you can not find a style that suits your purposes, you can edit an existing style on Mendeley's site using CSL Editor. Select a style to use as a template. CSL Editor saves the edited style on your Mendeley account and you can share it with other people.
