Mendeley - reference management tool

Creating folders

It is possible to create separate folders for different projects or texts.

  • Click on Collections -> New Collection in Mendeley Reference Manager.

  • Pull a reference from All references to a chosen folder or from one folder to another.

  • You can also select the reference (check the box next to it) and click on Organize in the toolbar down below and then Add to collection. You may select more than one folder to add the reference to.

  • Your references can be found in All references even if you add them to other folders.

  • Create a subfolder by right-clicking on a folder and then New Collection.

Adding notes to references

You can add notes (notebook), comments (annotations) and highligts (highlights), to the documents in your Mendeley library.

  1. Select a reference. Double-click to open the document in fulltext.
  2. In the top toolbar, you will find the tools notebookannotations and highlights.

Sharing your references

You can share your references and documents with other people by creating groups in Mendeley:

  • To create a group, select Private Groups -> New Group. Give your group a name.
  • Right-click on the group and select Manage Group. Under Invite members, add the email addresses to send invites.
  • You can create up to five groups, each of which can have 25 members. All members need to have a Mendeley account.
  • In addition to references, you can also share articles (PDF files) within a group. Members of the group can comment on them.
  • Other people can not see the group, its members or shared files.
  • NB! If you want to cite references from a group in Word, you need to save those references to your own Mendeley library first. In the text editor, you can only cite references stored in your own folders.
